8 Naturopath tips to address fine lines and wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles are welcome, but accelerated ageing is not ideal. There are things that you can do to encourage the natural ageing process and prevent accelerated breakdown of collagen. Addressing fine lines and wrinkles can not only be about what you need to avoid, but as much about what you need to focus on! I make preventing accelerated ageing super easy with my 8 naturopath-approved recommendations below.
1. Focus on Amino Acids
High quality amino acids are the foundation of firm skin – your body needs protein to build collagen so don’t skimp on it. Supplement with our Complexion Protein+ Powder which contains a complete essential amino acid profile along with Brown Rice Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid and Tremalla Mushroom
2. Supplement with these Essentials
Vitamin C + Antioxidants. Vitamin C is an essential building block of collagen production, whilst antioxidants can help to protect our existing collagen from depletion so the two are essential in our pursuit of healthy glowing skin. Consider our Native Collagen Powder
3. Top up your plate with healthy fats
Omega Rich fatty acids found in flax, chia and walnuts along with avocados are a fantastic way fight “inflamm-ageing”. Not only do they provide a boost of fibre, they also contain antioxidant rich Vitamin A, C and E. Add ¼ to ½ an avocado along with a handful of walnuts to your daily salad.
4. Up the ante on greens and veggies
Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain glucosinolates (sulfur-containing chemicals) which have incredible anti-ageing (and anti-cancer) benefits. Aim to have 1 cup daily along with 1 cup of leafy greens (rocket, spinach, cos lettuce etc). Leafy greens are abundant in chlorophyll and folate which helps to keep skin inflammation in check.
5. Keep blood sugar levels balanced
Elevated blood sugars can wreak havoc with skin. They can result in “glycation” a process whereby sugar attached to proteins in the blood stream, creating harmful free radicals and accelerating ageing. Avoid processed foods, sugar and foods high on the glycaemic index to keep blood sugars in check. If you find yourself craving a lot of sugar, boost fibre in your diet, supplement with magnesium, add a tablespoon of fermented veggies to your diet and take the herb Gymnema, found in our Balancing Butterfly Blue Tea.
6. Drink in Green Tea
Green Tea contains a very powerful antioxidant known as EGCG that helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors and UV damage along with general free radical damage. It also has the ability to fight off DNA damage in skin cells by promoting DNA repair. Enjoy the tea in our No.1 Green Goddess Detox or No.2 Fountain of Youth Tea, both come with extra antioxidant herbal boosts!
7. Reset with Bakuchiol
Retinoids have been shown to be one of the most effective ingredients for slowing the skin ageing process. However they can also cause irritation, sensitivity and flakiness. Enter Bakuchiol! Clinically proven to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles, this naturally derived ingredient is the latest trend in the beauty world. You will find it in our Beauty Reset Drops.
8. Sunscreen
The sun in Australia is harsh! Sun exposure will hasten collagen breakdown so use a physical sunscreen which uses zinc oxide (not a chemical sunscreen) to protect your skin from UV damage. SPF helps to combat the collagen depleting effects of sunlight – use an SPF30 or SPF50 like our Basking Beauty Sunscreen SPF50+.
