This is why you should only be using "edible" skincare

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

Our name says it all: the concept of "edible beauty" is at the core of the Edible Beauty Australia skincare philosophy.

In fact, I feel so strongly about our products being so pure that they are literally “edible,” that I pledge that “if you would not put in your mouth we would not put it in our products.” This is our "edible standard" when it comes to beauty and we are proud to set the bar high on toxin-free, botanical skincare.

Read on to discover why this really is so important. The facts may shock you, but the good news is, you don't have to compromise on results by following a truly edible beauty regime.

Five Tips To Maintain Your Summer Glow – Inside & Out

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

With fall in full swing, now is the time to ensure you are religiously maintaining your skin care and beauty regime ahead of the colder months to come. We have you covered on skin care and beauty essentials with our Top 5 beauty tips to help you keep that summer glow.

  1. Shed Your Layers: A good facial exfoliant can help remove dead skin cells from your face and body. This is critical as the weather gets cooler as this is the time when dry skin cells tend to proliferate. There is no need to scrub too hard – a gentle exfoliant will do the trick. If you are after a natural product that works immediately to brighten and soften the skin, our & Desert Lime Flawless Micro-Exfoliant is the product for you. This is a product that I will demonstrate to alleviate any concerns  about how "quick" natural products work as the results are visible after on application. This exfoliant is a softening and skin smoothing polish which uses coconut oil as a base. Its multi-active exfoliators including Wattle Seed and Rice Strawberry fruit extracts which boost skin radiance and enhance skin renewal.
  2. Lather Up: Oil based moisturisers are wonderful at protecting your skin from moisture loss. Whilst serums providing active ingredients to plump and firm the skin, a lotion is needed to seal in moisture and provide a barrier to protect the skin. Our No. 4 Vanilla Silk Hydrating Lotion is abundant in fatty acids along with Vitamins A and E from Coconut oil, Camellia Seed Oil and Cacao Butter. Our & Coco Bliss Intensive Repair Creme is a thicker cream, which is ultra-hydrating and absorbent but suited to more dehydrated skin or use as a night cream, providing ultimate repair and restoration.
  3. Glamorous Hands: Do not forget to give your hands some love. One of our favourite tricks for ensuring our hands are kept looking youthful is to lather them with coconut oil or olive oil or better still our & Velvet Coffee Body Butter. It is as easy as lathering the cream or oil onto your hands, popping on a pair of cotton gloves and waking up with ultra-hydrated and youthful hands.
  4. Gobble Up Your Glow: Our most effective internal glow generators in the cooler months include flaxseed oil, avocadoes, hemp seeds, chia seeds and coconut oil. These foods are abundant in fatty acids which work to nourish and hydrate the skin from the inside out.
  5. Drink In Your Glow: We need to be mindful of ensuring we have adequate fluid intake as the weather starts get cooler. However you can literally drink in a healthy glow. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, at the office have decanter filled with mint, ginger and lemon leaves and at home revel in herbal teas. Licorice, cleavers, calendula, burdock root are all wonderful for healing the skin and balancing hormones for a beautiful glow. They feature in No. 4 Golden Glow Beauty Tea. Our No. 5 White Chai Digestif Tea is also the perfect companion for cosy nights in.

Soak Society Founder Natalie Thorogood on pursuing your dreams, charcoal soaks and unwinding rituals

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

We love the Soak Society's toxin-free soak products and the natural beauty and wellness message the brand represents. In the blog post below we interview Natalie Thorogood, founder of the Soak Society and get a beautiful insight into the life of the successful female entrepreneur.
What inspired you to create your luxurious toxin-free soak range?
A few things. I couldn’t find a similar product on the market that was an affordable price point. I was making these salt, clay and essential oils mixes at home for myself and thought, why not create a brand around these soaks and make every product all about soaking!? Soak Society was born. I am so passionate about avoiding chemicals in beauty products, so being an all natural brand was a no brainer.
What is your ultimate way to unwind and your favourite soak product?
My favourite is the Sleep wellness soak. Being the owner of a growing business I find it hard to ‘switch off’ at nighttime, constantly tossing and turning because of too many thoughts! I drink the Edible Beauty Sleeping Beauty tea in the bath and put my phone on aeroplane mode so I can’t be distracted. This ritual has me feeling very sleepy! I often put my oil burner on with lavender oil in the bedroom afterwards too and read a book, bliss!
Tell us a little bit about what a day in the life of “Natalie Thorogood”...
I’m lucky to live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast near Noosa, so that definitely helps with work/life balance. I will start the day with replying to any urgent emails and figuring out the plan of attack for the day with my team. If the weather is nice, I will sometimes take a half hour break to have a swim and lay in the sun! No day is ‘regular’ because there are always different things to be done. Some days will be more production based and others are focused on new product development and strategy. I manage our social media, so there is always that too! Late afternoons are spent going for walks with girlfriends in the Noosa national park and then cooking dinner with my partner. I try not to work too late into the night, but I love what I do, so sometimes it can’t be helped!
If you could give female entrepreneurs just one piece of advice what would it be?
Never think that you can't do something. I really wish I knew that earlier, because I spent a lot of time telling myself I couldn't do something because of my background, education etc etc.
We tend to put limitations on ourselves, which are created by our minds! Honestly, there is nothing you can't do, all it takes is consistent hard work and a belief that you will succeed. Even if money is an issue, you will find a way. Put the focus on creating a really good product, ensuring you spend 80% of time on sales and the growth of the business.
Your business is going from strength to strength, are you able to give us a sneak peak on any exciting new products or initiatives you have planned?
We are just about to launch a new Noosa wellness soak in the next few days, AND we have also created an activated charcoal wellness soak in collaboration with The Lab Organics in Melbourne, called Yinyang. Both will be online very shortly! In the next few months we are working on launching a Soak Subscription for all our regular soakers, one wellness soak of your choice delivered to your house every 2 months which will definitely be out before Christmas!

How to Create Your Own Home Apothecary

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

When it comes to the home, many of our household cleaners can be as toxic as our skin care. By overhauling some of the main cleaning products we use, we can ensure our families’ health is not being impacted by harsh chemicals.

Chemicals in everyday household cleaners have been linked to the onset or worsening of asthma, a narrowing of blood vessels, headaches, shortness of breath, nausea, and prenatal exposure may be linked to attention deficit disorder or even autism in children. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and placenta, VOCs can depress the central nervous system; irritate the eyes, nose and throat; and reduce pulmonary function.

The good news is that you don’t need to rely on these toxic chemicals for a clean home. You can power through most household dirt with inexpensive and effective homemade cleaners. You can also customize your cleaners with beautiful smelling bacteria-busting essential oils.

Baking Soda: A truly multitasking cleaner, baking soda is a perfect substitute for cleaning powders that scour sinks and tubs without scratching. It’s also great for wiping down and deodorizing the fridge. Combined with an equal amount of vinegar, baking soda can freshen drains and prevent them from clogging.

Distilled White Vinegar: White vinegar is great at clearing grease and removing odour. Due to its neutralizing properties, white vinegar is also good for washing windows, cleaning kitchen counters and shining bathroom fixtures. Simply dilute 1 part vinegar in 4 parts water. Vinegar is also natural antibacterial due to its high acid contents so it makes a great alternative to caustic cleaners on toilets and floors.

Salt: Perfect for cutting through the grease in ovens, salt also works well for soaking up fresh carpet stains such as red wine, coffee or ink. Pour salt on the wet stain. Let dry, then vacuum.

Vegetable Oil (Castille) Soap: This natural soap is great for floors and all-purpose cleaning when combined with vinegar or even warm water. For an all-purpose cleaner, add 1⁄2 teaspoon of soap to 2 cups of water.. For floors, combine 2 teaspoons of soap with 6 cups of water. Make sure to rinse well to remove any dulling residue.

Lemons: Lemon’s citric acid content makes it perfect for cutting through stubborn grease and makes your home smell fresh. Lemon juice is also a natural bleach, especially when combined with the sun. Freshen cutting boards by rubbing a cut lemon over the surface. Lemon also works well for banishing fish and egg odors. Undiluted lemon juice can also be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits.

Recipe: All-purpose cleaner and disinfectant

Just as effective as popular antibacterial cleansers, this formula is perfect for kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

2 cups hot water

¼ cup white vinegar

½ teaspoon baking soda

15 drops tea tree essential oil

15 drops lavender essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a reusable spray bottle and shake well. To use, spray on surfaces, especially cutting boards, countertops and toilets. Wipe with a dry cloth.
