The bedroom should be the place you retreat to after a long day, your haven of peace and tranquillity. It should be where you enjoy relaxation and comfort.  As well as being comfortable and stylish it should also have an air of serenity. Understanding Feng Shui

The art of Feng Shui is over 3,500 years old and comes from Ancient China.  It utilises the laws of heaven and earth and is especially designed to improve life using positive energy in buildings.  Over more recent years it has gained in momentum and many people choose to design their home using the principles of Feng Shui.  In its simplest terms, it is a practice born out of positioning objects and colour together to invite harmony and bring the right energy into an area.  In your bedroom you want peace and tranquillity whereas in the living area you want it to be joyful, yet comfortable and sociable. 

Feng Shui works on the following five basic elements which come from the universe and emit their own distinct energy:

  • For health and wealth it uses wood
  • For wealth it uses water
  • For passion and strength it uses fire
  • For family unity it uses metal
  • For happiness it uses earth 

As well as the elements, Feng Shui also works with colours, and each colour represents the basic elements mentioned before.  Adding the right Feng Shui colour helps to boost positive energy in your chosen room.  The colours and what they represent are as follows:

  • For wealth, green, red, blue and purple
  • For love and compatibility, red, white and pink
  • For health, green, yellow, neutrals and blue
  • For creativity, pastels and white
  • For self-development, green, black and blue

 

Where to Use Feng Shui Colours In Your Bedroom

There is a lot of intelligence in Feng Shui, it’s understanding what colour does to emotion justifies where it is placed.  Using the right colours will harmonise your bedroom so you enjoy spending time there even more than you might do now!  Here are the best colours for your bedroom (according to the laws of Feng Shui): 

Red

Red in Feng Shui is perceived as a happy, passionate shade which is good to use in moderation in bedrooms because of its passionate side.  Never dominate a bedroom using red because too much can encourage aggressiveness, arguments and even disrupt concentration – use it in moderation to get the right balance.  So, in bedrooms, add it as an accessory. 

Blue

Use blue where you want to feel calmness and tranquillity which is why it’s fantastic for bedrooms as it promotes sleep.  In Feng Shui it represents wisdom and serenity.

Pastels

Seen as tranquil and gentle, pastels are superb for bedrooms because they evoke peace and therefore work well for inducing sleep.  In Feng Shui they are seen as spiritual and harmonious so if you like a bright but soft bedroom – use pastel shades and accessories. 

 

Feng Shui Object Placement 

Feng Shui works with placement as well as colour.  If you put an object in the wrong position you risk disrupting the room’s energy so it’s important to pay attention to where to put certain types of objects, plants, flowers etc.  Try and introduce Feng Shui into your basic interior scheme, the belief is that this encourages positivity at home and balances personalities. The Chinese refer to this as “Bagua”.  Here are some basic tips to help get your home’s energy just right:

  • Don’t put a mirror in a bedroom because the Ancient Chinese believe this to be bad Feng Shui as a mirror hinders a peaceful sleep.
  • Hide away TV’s, laptops and iPads in cabinets when not in use, this is because they heavily influence natural energy flow in day to day life.
  • Don’t leave corners in rooms empty because this is not seen as a good way to channel positive energy. Use these areas and introduce candles, pretty lamps or plants to fill them.

 

What To Avoid

Avoid purple unless it’s in small accessories, too much disrupts harmony. Don’t mix red with blue or black because the fire and water elements are not harmonious – so the Feng Shui colours won’t create harmonious energy. Finally, never over clutter as it disrupts flow – put things away when you aren’t using them and keep your accessories to a minimum – remember, in Feng Shui, less is more.
