Serum Layering – Why Making This Part of Your Skincare Routine Can Solve Your Complexion Woes
Product layering techniques used by K-beauty queens (that stands for the seemingly miracle world of Korean beauty, in case you're new to the term) has become increasingly popular in recent years. Layering serums more specifically, however, is a fairly new concept and often one causing some confusion and ambiguity. Do I really need more than one serum in my regime? When do I apply the serums and in what order? How do I select the right serum for me? are questions that might be floating through your mind, but from a scientific and tried-and-tested standpoint, we can guarantee that serum layering with the right products can have a dramatically positive effect on your complexion, from treating concerns such as acne and ageing, to boosting your overall glow.
I feel so strongly about the efficacy of serums in solving our skincare woes that I have created a sub-range of Edible Beauty products known as our Boosters, which are essentially "skin food" serums, which use an emulsion of beauty-boosting superfoods, vitamins, antioxidants and omegas targeted to specific skincare conditions and concerns.
The Booster serums work alongside our best-selling No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum (which is step 3 of our Core Four skincare ritual) are designed to be applied prior to the No.3 serum to effectively combat pigmentation, fine lines, redness and sensitivity and uneven skin tone - depending on which Booster you choose. So do you still need our antioxidant serum, No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum? Essentially YES! We believe an anti-ageing serum like this should be a key component of any skincare regime, which we will explain further below. And is there a benefit in applying two serums in your beauty routine? The answer is again, YES! Here's why layering serums really is twice as good...
1. Antioxidants are key.
Using an antioxidant serum which contains a variety of botanical extracts rich in vitamins C and E, protects you against the unstable molecules in your skin that produce oxidants. Antioxidants are essentially our tools for reversing the signs of ageing and protecting the skin from the main culprits behind fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and discolouration. We need to start using antioxidants on the skin from a young age, given the high levels of pollutants in the air, along with the stressors of contemporary lives and the impact of harsh sun exposure.
When it comes to the best antioxidants to use on your skin, I love Australian native extracts which are powerhouses of anti-ageing nutrients. The Kakadu Plum found in our No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum is the highest natural plant-based sources of vitamin C in the world. It not only boosts collagen production, it also enhances skin repair, brightens your complexion and soothes skin irritation. Combined with plumping hyaluronic acid and anti-ageing Acerola and Edelweiss. our No.3 serum gives your skin a powerful surge of what it needs to be firm and youthful.
2. Up the ante on UV protection.
Your serum and sunscreen work as a tag team. By applying your antioxidant serum prior to your sunscreen it works to give you the maximum possible protection against sun-induced ageing. Our No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum contains white tea extract which has been shown in studies to protect the skin against UV exposure. Studies show the antioxidants in white tea are effective in boosting the immune function of skin cells and protecting them against the oxidative damage that occurs through exposure to the sun. White tea also protects skin cells from DNA damage that can occur after exposure to sunlight. White tea extract also appears to build the skin's resistance against stresses that cause the skin to age.
3. Targeted skincare nutrition works, so choose your second serum for you!
If your skin is flawless, smooth and even toned then the No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum may be all you need in the serum department to take care of your healthy skin. However if you are needing extra support due to skincare concerns (which is most of us!), then a targeted Booster serum is what your skincare routine may be lacking. We recommend adding in this second serum layer before your No.3 and straight after cleansing and toning to ensure you are maximising the absorption of active botanicals designed to reduce hyperpigmentation, soothe redness, target acne breakouts or reduce the wrinkle depth and fine lines.
The Booster serums can also be used as spot treatments to work on specific problem areas of your face. For instance, our Turmeric Brightening Serum, which is focused on brightening dark spots and pigmentation, is the perfect product to apply specifically to just your areas of pigmentation. Likewise, our Plant Collagen Plumping Serum can be used on the targeted areas where skin is losing firmness and elasticity, such as on the forehead or around the eyes and mouth.
