Sip Yourself Slim With Edible Beauty Tea

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

When it comes to detoxifying, removing excess fluid and trimming down, using natural herbs is one of the most effective and therapeutic ways to get the results you desire. Three of my favourite products for slimming down include No.1 Green Goddess Detox Tea, No. 6 Puff Away Tea & No. 7 Slim Me tea. In … Continue reading

No. 1 Green Goddess Detox Tea

Our Green Goddess blend is our bestselling Beauty Tea at Edible Beauty. There are two reasons why. Firstly, it is wonderfully therapeutic and medicinal, but secondly it tastes light and refreshing. We have brought in the big guns when it comes to detoxifying with Schizandra Berry, St Mary’s Thistle and Dandelion Root. The medicinal action of these herbs lies in their ability to heal and regenerate the liver and to assist the liver in clearing toxins from the body. Interestingly, St Mary’s Thistle has been clinically shown to assist in the management of Type 2 diabetes. These herbs are often promoted as “hang-over” cures and anecdotally I have seen them as being effective in hastening recovery from a few too many margaritas.

In their traditional preparation the liver loving herbs in this blend are often bitter. However rest assured, we have artfully combined them with lemongrass, ginger and calendula which make this tea a delight to drink either hot or iced with a squeeze of lemon and lime. Aim to have three cups daily for a period of two weeks for maximum therapeutic action.

No. 6 Puff Away Tea

Puff Away is a kidney cleansing tea which has a wonderful diuretic action. The synergistic blend of the herbs in this blend work to reduce water retention, puffiness and revive tired eyes and skin. This blend is particularly unique due to the addition of an Amazonian herb named Guayusa. Guayusa is rich in nutrients including theobromine, a compound which reduces inflammation and blood pressure while also acting as a diuretic. Guayusa has traditionally been used to detoxify the blood, improve the function of the kidneys and urinary tract, and improve digestion and elimination. Dandelion leaves, Nettle and Juniper Berries, which are also found in the tea blend, act as diuretics, flushing the kidneys and assisting in accelerating their filtration activity. This tea has an uplifting spearmint flavor which makes it easy to have about two to three cups daily for maximum therapeutic action. Have this tea during the day so your sleep is not disturbed with visits to the bathroom.

No. 7 Slim Me Tea

One of most beautiful tea blends, No. 7 Slim Me is the most popular amongst our female body builder customers who love to use this blend in the lead up to competitions. It contains the very special Pu-erh tea. This tea has been used for more than 1,700 years in China.

Pu-erh is renowned for its special ability to assist in weight loss and fat burning. It works to boost the metabolism, improve digestion and reduce fat absorption. Drinking this tea an hour after meals is the most effective way to improve fat digestion and reduce fat absorption. This teas is more effective than standard black tea due to the method of its preparation.

Pu-erh tea is fermented similarly to oolong tea and then goes through an additional process called post-fermentation. After the tea is fermented, the leaves are sun-dried, and aged in a high humidity environment. This fermentation process increases the potency of the actives in the tea, enhancing its therapeutic benefits.

As an added benefit, this tea works to improve mental alertness and to stimulate blood flow to the central nervous system. This tea is very easy to drink with a deliciously mellow and earthy flavour.

Our Six Favourite Beauty Tea Fixes

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

One of the things that always amazes me about botanicals is how versatile they are in their therapeutic use. This also applies to herbal tea which can be used to brighten eyes, rejuvenate hair, relax as well as of course tantalising your taste buds.

Below our six favourite beauty “inside & out” applications of tea which you may not be aware of:

  1. Luscious Locks: EGG found in green tea has in studies been shown to stimulate hair production by promoting the health and boosting the activity of dermal papillae. Green tea is also rich in antioxidants which strengthens and protects the hair from UV damage. Rinse your hair with the cold brew after shampooing or leave the tea on without rinsing to further condition and nourish your hair. Choose Black tea as a rinse to thicken and strengthen hair or if you have dark hair and would like to restore its lustre. Choose Rooibos tea if you have red or light brown hair, either rinse you hair with the tea or use it as a leave in conditioner to promote a red tone. Chamomile tea is our favourite rinse for promoting shine and natural highlights. Our No. 10 Balancing Butterfly Blue tea is a beautiful tea taken internally to boost circulation to the hair helping to nourish and restore it.
  2. Bright Eyes: Both Chamomile and Black tea work wonders for relieving red irritate eyes. Brew the tea, cool, strain well and infuse a cotton cloth into the herbal tisane. Soak well, remove and apply onto the eye area as a compress for ten to twenty minutes. The tannins in the tea work to reduce itching and inflammation whilst the antimicrobial properties of chamomile assist in combating microbes that may be present in the eyes.
  3. Puff Away: Cucumbers are traditionally the go-to home remedy for puffy eyes. However Peppermint, Chamomile and Black tea bags work wonderfully to reduce puffy and swollen eyes. Soak the bags for about ten minutes in boiling water, remove, place in the fridge until cool and then place on closed eyelids for 20 minutes. The tannins in the tea work to reduce inflammation, depuff and revive tired eyes. If you wish to always have a natural remedy at your finger tips, brew green or black tea and place in ice cube trays. Place the ice cubes in a thin cloth and on the eyes for an immediate cure to swollen eyes.
  4. Acne Away: Acne is often associated with an imbalance in hormone production for which liver cleansing teas such as Dandelion Root & St Mary’s Thistle and androgen calming teas such as Licorice and Peony root work effectively to combat the internal turmoil often creating acne. We have the blends ready to go in our No. 1 Green Goddess Detox and No. 4 Golden Glow Tea.
  5. Sinus Clear: Ginger, Chilli and Yarrow are my favourite herbs for stimulating the sinuses, boosting circulation and combating the common cold. You cannot go past the combination of teas found in No. 9 Tulsi Immune Fire for powerful sinus and fever fighting action.
  6. Circulation Boost: Poor circulation, cold hands and feet and a slow metabolism need not be something you need to put up with. Seep some grated ginger in hot water or reach for some ginkgo tea or better still our No. 9 Tulsi Immune Fire to get that blood rushing.

  1. Saffron

If you had thought you had exhausted most of the skin boosting herbs and foods there were out there, you may be surprising to know that there is a super exotic skin-loving spice that is relatively undiscovered when it comes to the skin. Saffron is an exotic spice obtained from the flower “saffron crocus”. It is found in Europe and Asia and literally worth its weight in gold due to the sheer volume of flowers required to obtain one gram.

Saffron is a wonderful agent for boosting skin hydration and brightening the skin. It is rich in skin-loving vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc and B vitamins which are all essential for healthy skin repair and renewal. What makes the spice incredibly potent is its unique profile of actives, the most important of them is a-crocin, a carotenoid compound, which gives the threads their characteristic golden-yellow colour. It also contains other carotenoids, including zea-xanthin, lycopene, a- and ß-carotenes which are powerful anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants which protect the skin from oxidative damage and aid in accelerating skin cell renewal.

On the Inside: Tea is one of the best ways to ingest saffron for its beauty benefits.  The active compounds in the saffron threads are water soluble, and absorb straight into your bloodstream through your digestive system. Just add 4 to 6 strands of saffron to one cup of boiling water. Add some grated ginger (about 1 teaspoon) or cinnamon along with a pinch of stevia. Steep for 15 minutes to allow the threads to infuse and release their active compounds into the hot water.

On the Outside: Saffron will assist the skin in retaining moisture and also has skin lightening benefits which will help you achieve an ethereal glow. It is also antimicrobial so when applied topically will help to soothe acne-prone skin. To make a mask, add a few threads of saffron to a ¼ of a cup of milk. Add a teaspoon of olive oil and let the strands infuse overnight if possible. Apply this mixture to the skin with some cotton wool and leave it on for at least thirty minutes before rinsing off.

  1. Kefir

You are likely to know about the benefits of fermented foods or the gut however you may not know that they also work wonderfully to rejuvenate the skin, boost collagen production and reduce inflammation.

The skin and gut axis are intimately connected which means that the microbes in our gut communicate with the bacteria that are living within the skin barrier. This means that our gut microbes have a role to play in the control of

Kefir specifically is rich in probiotics which improve gut flora and aid in the digestion of food and absorption of skin-friendly nutrients and minerals, which your body requires to create glowing and beautiful skin.

Studies have shown that acne, eczema and even psoriasis benefit from the consumption of probiotics.

On the Inside: Boost your gut friendly bacteria with a dose of kefir daily. You will notice your digestive system improves (any tendencies towards constipation will be alleviated) and your body’s detoxification processes will also get a kick start. This will allow your skin to benefit from the removal of excess toxins which can make their way to the skin barrier and the removal of excess hormones which can create hormonal skin conditions. You don’t need much kefir to provide you with skin and belly benefits. Start with 30 mls daily and build to 50 mls over the course of 2 to 3 weeks.

On the Outside: When applied topically fermented foods or probiotic rich foods have been shown to increase hydration by strengthening the fatty ceramide layer of the skin which assists in retaining moisture. They also assist in protecting the skin barrier against unfriendly bacteria, environmental toxins and free radicals which cause skin ageing.

  1. Chamomile

Chamomile beats most herbs when it comes to its soothing properties. This liquid gold infusion has so many skin benefits from being anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, anti-bacterial and skin healing. One of the reasons I love it is due to its ability to reduce skin redness and irritation including relieving eczema and to combat acne.

Chamomile’s healing properties come from its daisy-like flowers, which contain volatile oils (including bisabolol, bisabolol oxides A and B, and matricin) as well as flavonoids (particularly a compound called apigenin) and other therapeutic substances.

On the Inside: Chamomile tea is so easy to drink, whether it is as a cold drink or a hot pre-bedtime relaxant. Edible Beauty No. 3 Sleeping Beauty Tea has a wonderful dose of the herb in there.

On the Outside: Edible Beauty Australia’s & Soothe Me Balm contains Chamomile Extract. Apply the balm to the skin before bedtime to reduce redness, irritation and provide ultra-hydration.
