Is Your Skincare is Fertility-Friendly? It Should Be!

Happy hormones are vital to good health, however fertility issues and hormonal imbalances are becoming increasingly common amongst women of all ages. Whilst we now have more awareness around what these diagnoses are, what many people are not aware is that exposing yourself to the chemicals in conventional skincare can be a prime culprit in causing "hormone havoc". Bottom line: where you want to have balanced hormones, keep your fertility in check, or are at the stage in life when you are trying to conceive or are already pregnant, making sure your beauty regime is "fertility-friendly" is key.

Follow the "Edible" Ingredient Standard

Our name says it all: the concept of "edible beauty" is at the core of the Edible Beauty Australia skincare philosophy. I feel so strongly about our products being so pure that they are literally “edible,” that I pledge that “if you would not put in your mouth we would not put it in our products.” This is our "edible standard" when it comes to beauty and we are proud to set the bar high on toxin-free, botanical skincare.

Edible Beauty was Created to Help Women with their Fertility

As a naturopath, I created the Edible Beauty skincare range specifically for my clients who were pregnant, planning pregnancy, and for females in general who were seeking a product range that was therapeutic and luxurious yet did not contain endocrine disrupting toxins.

Given we absorb a large percentage of what we put on our skin (a staggering 60-80%), and the fact that what we put on our skin bypasses our digestive and detoxification systems, what we are using topically becomes just as important (or maybe even more so) as what we are eating. Whilst working at a fertility clinic I was recommending that, in addition to changes to their food and lifestyle routines, my patients make changes to their personal care products.

However, I was shocked to find that there were very few options available for skincare products that matched the "edible standard" and that were also luxurious and therapeutic. As a result, I embarked on creating a therapeutic, wildcrafted, botanical and truly "edible" skincare line.  The range is so pure that you can rest assured it does not interfere with our precious hormone balance. All of our pregnancy safe skincare products can be found here.

Changes to Make to Your Beauty Regime for Happy Hormones, Fertility & a Healthy Pregnancy and Baby

The golden rule: avoid ALL nasties

To keep your hormones balanced, your fertility at peak, and protect your baby (and yourself!) during pregnancy, it is vital that you rule out any skincare, makeup and other personal care items that contain the common nasties such as sulfates, parabens, phthalates and artificial fragrances. They should also free of benzyl alcohol, propylene glycol, all preservatives, colours, synthetics and any ingredient that you would not recognise or find in your food. Every ingredient in our products is pure and botanical, and good enough to eat!

Chemicals make their way through the placenta to your baby

The placenta is not the solid barrier we once thought. In fact, over 287 chemicals have been found in the umbilical cords of babies, associated with chemicals being used by mum either in her personal care or household cleaning products. Women can use an average of 168 chemicals including reproductive and developmental toxins – they are found in the average of 12 personal care products women use daily.

Toxins found in beauty products have been linked to pre-term birth, low birth weight, developmental delays and altered gene expression. This is just what we know of – many of the toxins have not been necessarily been tested on pregnant women (for good reason). With an increased rate of autism, allergies and asthma in newborns and children it makes sense to start looking more closely at what we are putting on an in our bodies.

For more information on toxins to avoid read our post here.

"When it comes to the ultimate beauty regime during pregnancy, think about how you would “feed” your body. Keep products as simple and pure as possible and emphasise firming and hydrating products which maintain the skin firmness and elasticity. My philosophy always includes inside out beauty principles- think about nourishing your skin internally with lots of hydrating alkaline foods, become mindful of consuming an abundance of clean protein sources (including those from whole grains, nuts and legumes) and ensure your diet also includes antioxidant rich foods and at least 2 litres of filtered water."

Fertility-Friendly Beauty Works!

Whilst there are so many natural skincare and beauty products on the market, not all of them are pregnancy friendly. Science continues to show that our fertility and our babies are being affected by what we are putting on our skin. Even if you do not choose to follow through with a toxin free beauty regime post-pregnancy, commit to doing so pre-conception and during pregnancy for the sake of your fertility and bubba! The good news is that we have so many options available when it comes to natural fertility and pregnancy safe skincare. You are not making a compromise by using natural skincare products because they work as well, if not often even better, than their conventional counterparts. The best part? They don't come with the nasty hormone disrupting side-effects. With a little extra care in product selection, you can put your mind at ease and sport your radiant pregnant glow whilst doing the best thing by your bubba-to-be.
