Four Common Ingredients to Avoid in Your Baby's Skincare

Posted by Anna Mitsios on

When it comes to the health of our babies, there is nothing more important than providing them with the most pure and natural products both internally externally to allow them to thrive.

If you are familiar with Edible Beauty Australia you would know that I am so passionate about spreading the word on the importance of edible skincare.  About 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies so when it comes to skincare for our precious babies, whose skin is five times more permeable than our own, we want to ensure that we are only using the most pure, toxin-free and luxurious products on their delicate skin.

When we look closely at some of the “trusted” products we have been buying for our babies for decades, it is disconcerting to become aware of common “nasties” that we are applying on their skin. Four common ingredients (there are many more) found in skincare for our babies include:

  1. Mineral oils: Essentially the main ingredient in common baby oils, this is a cheap by product of petroleum processing and is responsible for skin itchiness, skin corrosion and the disruption of skin sebum production.
  2. Fragrances: Used to hide the smell of chemicals, fragrances include the baby powder scent that characterises baby skincare. Only 800 of 4000 chemicals used as fragrances have been tested for toxicity and there is no obligation for companies to reveal what is in a fragrance – often they are derived from coal and petroleum derived synthetic chemicals responsible for allergies, respiratory and neurological damage.
  3. 1,4 Dioxane and Ethylated Surfactants: This is what gives products “foam”. It is found in 57% of baby soaps and has been shown to stay on the skin for days. Studies show it is responsible or hormone imbalance and it is a known carcinogen.
  4. Propylene Glycol: Found in most baby wipes, this is a known carcinogen and can also cause skin irritation and burning.

The Edible Bubba skincare range has been created to address the need for 100% pure, botanical, luxurious and “edible” skincare for our babies. It contains none of the above mentioned toxic ingredients and all of the products have been created with sensitive delicate baby skin in mind. They are hypoallergenic, rich in nourishing botanicals and wildcrafted Australian extracts and look, smell and feel delightful on the skin.
